iW NEWS | Golden Trailer Awards Announced
Thursday night at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, the 9th Annual Golden Trailer Awards were handed out in a ceremony hosted by comedian Sinbad. The upcoming " The Dark Knight" won best action trailer, while " Iron Man" won the best overall for summer 2008. " In Bruges" was named the most original, while " The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and " The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" won for best music and best voice-over, respectively. " No Country For Old Men" was awarded the best dramatic trailer, " Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?" best documentary, and " Day Night Day Night" for best independent. The awards will be televised on May 26, 2008 on MyNetworkTV, which will include the winner of the publicly voted "trailer of the year." All other winners were deciphered by a jury that included Joss Whedon, Jonathan D. Krane, Morgan Spurlock, Eli Roth, Gary Meyet and Claudia Puig. [Peter Knegt]

iW NEWS | Seattle To Honor Kingsley
Sir Ben Kingsley has been named the recipient of the 2008 Golden Space Needle for Outstanding Achievement in Acting at the 34th Seattle International Film Festival. The award will be given at a tribute event at the Egyptian Theatre in Seattle on May, 25, 2008, and will be followed by the North American premiere of Isabel Coixet's " Elegy," which Kingsley stars in. After the screening, Kingsley will take the stage again for an interview moderated by David Poland. Three other Kingsley films, a special screening of " Sexy Beast" and two Seattle premieres, Jonathan Levine's " The Wackness" and Brad Anderson's " Transsiberian" will also play during the festival, which runs from May 22 through June 15. C. Karim Chrobog's' " War Child" won The Cadillac Award, receiving a $25,000 cash prize after being named the audience favorite at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival. iW NEWS | Foreign Finalists Announced For Student Oscar
Five finalists were selected from 45 entries representing 29 foreign countries to compete for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 2008 Honorary Foreign Film award in the 35th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. The finalists include Martin Duda's " I Am Bigger and Better (Czech Republic), Sergi Perez's " New Dress" (Spain), Reto Caffi's " On the Line" (Germany), Lior Geller's " Roads" (Israel), Matev Luzar's " Vucko" (Slovenia). The winning student filmmaker will be brought to Los Angeles, along with U.S.-based Student Academy Award winners, to participate in a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate in the awards presentation ceremony on June 7 in Beverly Hills. iW NEWS | Tribeca Film Institute Announces Fellowships
The Tribeca Film Institute announced the recipients of its 2008 Media Arts Fellowships Tuesday. The fellowships, founded and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, recognize the artistic excellence of 20 film, video and new media artists in the United States with cash awards of $35,000 each. The program also awards two additional Fellowships of $7,500 each to emerging film and video artists. "These 22 artists represent some of the most talented and forward-thinking artists creating independent media today" said Jane Rosenthal, Co-Chair of the Tribeca Film Institute in a statement. "We look forward to their lasting and substantial contribution to independent film and arts." The film and video fellows are Julianna Brannum, Andrew Bujalski, Daniel Carrera, Cherien Dabis, Jacqueline Goss, Judith Helfand, Braden King, Billy Luther, Shirin Neshat, Hugo Perez, Laura Poitras, Dee Rees, Jennifer Reeves, Naomi Uman, Lauren Woods, and Jessica Yu. iW NEWS | Hot Docs Leaps In Attendance, Awards "Root"
The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival finished up Sunday, with a record-breaking attendance of 85,000, a 25% increase over last year. The 11 day festival screened 172 films from 36 countries. "The success of this year's Festival is a testament to our audiences," said Executive Director Chris McDonald in a statement. "Their passion for docs and investment in the Festival is inspiring. Filmmakers love screening their work in this city." The festival announced most of its juried awards Friday, but two awards were announced Sunday, including the Hot Docs Audience Award, which was awarded to Lisa Merton and Alan Dater's " Taking Root: The Vision of the Wangari Maathai." Runners-up were Benson Lee's " Planet B-Boy" and Kurt Kuenne's " Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father." The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Prize for best Canadian documentary was also announced, going to Pierre Mignault and Helene Magny's " Shock Waves." The 6th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles announced its winners, with Richie Mehta's " Amal" winning the Grand Jury Prize for best narrative feature. Yunus Vally's " The Glow of White Women" was given the jury's best documentary prize, while special mentions were awarded to Shivajee Chandrabhushan's " Frozen" (in narrative) and Liz Mermin's " Shot in Bombay" (in documentary). iW NEWS | "English Surgeon," "Junior" Top Winners at Hot Docs
The winners of the 15th Annual Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival were announced Friday night at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. Ten awards and $30,000 in cash and prizes were presented. Geoffrey Smith's " The English Surgeon" won for best international feature documentary, with the jury commenting in a statement: "Polished and shameless, in the best sense of combining two seemingly contradictory elements and shaping them into a satisfying and penetrating whole." Isabelle Lavigne and Stephane Thibault's hockey doc " Junior" won the award for best canadian feature documentary. Special jury prizes were awarded to Tamar Yarom's " To See If I'm Smiling" in the international category, and Nik Sheenan's " Flicker" in the Canadian category. The new HBO Documentary Films Emerging Artist Award was presented to Boris Despodov for " Corridor #8." The 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, along with the Tribeca Film Institute, announced the winners of the fifth annual Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Awards. Tribeca All Access (TAA) is a program designed to help "foster relationships between film industry executives and filmmakers from traditionally underrepresented communities." The winners were announced earlier this evening at a ceremony at Budakkan in New York City. Pete Chatmon won the narrative section prize for his current screenplay, " $Free.99," co-written by Candice Sanchez McClaren. The emerging narrative section prize went to Leigh Dana Jackson for " The Infinite Life of Stuart Hornsley," with producer Moira Griffin." Gemma Cubero and Celeste Carrasco won the documentary section award for their work-in-progress, " She Wants to Be A Matador," while Anslem Richardson won the screenwriting section prize for " Bardos. The winners were selected from 31 eligible projects. The first three come with $12,000 prizes, while the latter is awarded $8,500. "We continue to be impressed at the caliber of our Tribeca All Access filmmakers," said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Institute, in a statement. iW NEWS | Recipient of Maryland Filmmakers Fellowship Announced
The Sundance Institute and the Maryland Filmmakers Fellowship announced the recipients of their joint fellowship Tuesday. John Morgan and Meg La Fauve, for their feature film project " The Cavanaughs were presented with a $10,000 grant to help move the project forward. "The Cavanaughs" details the story of an evangelical woman who suddenly rejects her faith and family and falls in love with a woman, sending the rest of her family into chaos. The 13th Annual Nantucket Film Festival announced that Judd Apatow will receive the Suzanne and Bob Wright Screenwriter's Tribute Award during the fest, while Meg Ryan will be honored with the Compass Rose Acting Tribute Award. Ryan will be on hand to present the second Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award, which gives a cash prize to a promising female writer/director at the festival. iW NEWS | "Red Like The Sky" a Winner in Palm Beach
The 13th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival handed out its awards this week, with Christiano Bortone's " Red Like The Sky" (Rosso Come II Cielo) taking the jury's best feature film and best director awards. The film recounts the true story of the early life of blind sound editor Micro Mencacci. Other awards went to the ensemble cast of " Kings," which includes Colm Meaney and Brendan Conroy, for achievement in acting, while Lauzanne Xavier's " With One Voice" (D'une Suele Voix) won the jury's award for best documentary feature. Shalini Kantaya's " A Drop of Life" won the short film award. Audience awards went to Lynn Roth's " The Little Traitor for best feature film, and Jody Lambert's " Of All Things" for best documentary feature. "This year, for me, it was refreshing and inspiring to have had the honor to discover so many wonderful filmmakers from the corners of the earth," said PBIFF Director Randi Emerman in a statement. iW NEWS | NYU's First Run Fest Announces Winners
New York University's 66th annual First Run Film Festival, which screens the work of student films from the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at the Tisch School of the Arts, announced their award winners at a ceremony at the Cantor Film Center Monday night. This year's festival screened 105 films, videos, multimedia, and animation projects, and six films were singled out for over $50,000 in cash prizes. The first prize winners of the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation Awards for Excellence in Filmmaking were Andrew MacLean for " Sikumi" in the Graduate Division, and Benedict Campbell for " Lloyd Neck" in the Undergraduate Division. MacLean and Campbell also both won their divisional awards for the screenwriting and directing, totaling $15,000 in prizes for each. They join past recipients Spike Lee, Ang Lee and Nancy Savoca, among others. A panel of industry professionals selected the winning films from a group of 14 finalists. [Peter Knegt]
